IPTV on Apple TV: setup guide
Apple TV is quick and pleasant to use, and it is also the strictest of the TV boxes: an app either is in the App Store or cannot be installed. This guide shows what to look for and how to get Smartiflix playing.

- Where apps come from
- App Store only
- Extra apps allowed
- No
- Login
- Xtream Codes or M3U
- Best connection
- Ethernet, on models with a port
What an Apple TV needs to show your channels
The system inside an Apple TV is called tvOS, and it has an App Store of its own. To watch Smartiflix you install an IPTV player from that store and enter the access details we send you. The player is only the screen and the remote control of the service: without your details it shows nothing.
Because there is no way to install an app from outside the store, the first thing to check is that a player you like is available there. The list changes over time, and some players are sold under more than one name.
What you need
- An Apple TV with tvOS up to date, signed in with an Apple Account.
- A stable internet connection. Some Apple TV models have an Ethernet port; if yours does, use it.
- Our message with your Xtream Codes login and your M3U playlist. It is sent by WhatsApp or email when the order is confirmed.
- An iPhone or iPad nearby, if you have one. It makes typing far easier.
Finding a player in the App Store
Open the App Store on the Apple TV and search for IPTV player. Before you install one, read its description and check two things: that it supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists, and whether it is free, paid once or paid by subscription.
| Kind of player | What to expect | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Players with an Xtream Codes login | Live TV, movies and series arranged for you | The simplest way to use your Smartiflix details |
| Players that take an M3U address | One list with every channel | Use the playlist address we send |
| VLC | A free player that opens an M3U address | A plain layout; good for a quick test |
IPTV Smarters, one of the apps our order form lists, is published for Apple devices under a Smarters name: search for Smarters to find it. Some players are free for a while and then ask you to pay their developer; that payment is separate from your Smartiflix plan.
Setup, step by step
- Go to the App Store on your Apple TV, look up the player you picked and download it.
- Start the app. It asks you to add a playlist or a user, depending on its wording.
- Go for Xtream Codes if the player lists it and fill in what we sent: server address, then username, then password. A player that lists only M3U gets the playlist address instead.
- The channels and the guide take a moment to appear the first time. When they have, open a channel.
When a text field opens on the Apple TV, an iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account offers its keyboard. You can also open the Apple TV Remote from Control Centre on the phone and type there.
AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad
There is a second route, with nothing to install on the Apple TV. Play a channel in the app you already use on an iPhone or iPad, then press the AirPlay symbol in the video controls and pick the Apple TV from the list. The picture moves to the television while the phone stays in control.
It is handy when the player you like exists for the phone but not for the television. For everyday viewing an app installed on the Apple TV is smoother, because nothing depends on the phone staying awake and nearby. The iPhone and iPad guide covers the phone side.
Connection and picture
- Use a cable to the router when your model has an Ethernet port. It removes most of the stops and starts that Wi-Fi causes.
- On Wi-Fi, choose the 5 GHz band and keep the box in the same room as the router if you can.
- An Apple TV 4K shows 4K when the channel is broadcast in 4K and your connection is fast enough. Most live channels are HD.
Common problems on Apple TV
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The player you want is not in the App Store | Choose another player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U, or use AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad |
| The playlist will not load | Enter your details again exactly as we sent them; one wrong character is enough |
| The app asks for an activation or a payment | That comes from the developer of the app, not from Smartiflix; follow its instructions or pick another player |
| The TV guide is empty | Look for an update or reload command for the guide in the player, run it and wait a little |
| The picture stops and starts in the evening | Switch to a cable or to the 5 GHz band |
For anything else, support answers by WhatsApp or email around the clock.
Limits to know about
- You cannot add an app that is not in the App Store. Check that a suitable player exists before you rely on the Apple TV as your main screen.
- Players come and go, and their names change. If one disappears, your access details still work in any other.
- The older Apple TV HD is slower than the 4K models and does not show 4K.
What to check during a free trial
- That the player you picked accepts your Xtream Codes login without trouble.
- That the remote feels comfortable for changing channels and opening the guide.
- That the picture holds during a busy evening on your own connection.
- That AirPlay from your phone works, in case you ever need it.
The free trial runs on one device and asks for no payment details.
