IPTV EPG Not Loading? How to Fix the TV Guide

A blank or wrong TV guide is one of the most common IPTV problems, and one of the easiest to solve. Here is why the guide goes missing, shows the wrong times or skips channels, and what to do in each case.

The channels play, but the guide is blank. Or it shows yesterday's schedule, or every program starts an hour late. A guide that misbehaves is one of the first things new IPTV viewers run into, and it almost never means anything is wrong with the subscription itself.

The reason is that the guide and the channels travel separately. Once you know how the guide reaches your player, each problem has a clear fix.

How the TV guide reaches your player

The guide, also called the EPG (electronic program guide), is a large file of schedules: for every channel, the title, start time and end time of each program over the coming days. Your player downloads that file, then matches every entry to a channel in your list using an identifier that both sides share.

How the player finds the file depends on the way you signed in.

  • With an Xtream Codes login, most players ask the same server for the guide automatically, right after loading the channels.
  • With an M3U playlist, the address of the guide may be written into the first line of the playlist, and the player picks it up from there. If it is not, the player shows channels with no schedule until a guide address is entered in its settings.

So two separate steps have to succeed: downloading the guide, and matching it to the channels. Each kind of problem below comes from one of them. If the two formats are new to you, M3U and Xtream Codes are compared here.

The guide is empty after you first sign in

This is usually just a matter of time. A guide covering a large lineup over several days is a big download, and many players load it only after the channel list, in the background.

  1. Leave the player open for a few minutes after signing in, ideally on the guide screen.
  2. Find the option to update or reload the guide. Its name varies (Update EPG, Refresh TV guide, Reload), and it usually sits in the settings or in the menu of the guide itself.
  3. Wait for the progress indicator to finish before leaving the app.

Some players fetch the guide on a schedule, once a day for example. After the first manual update, check that automatic updates are switched on so that the schedule never runs out.

Only some channels have no schedule

A guide with gaps is normal to a degree. Not every channel publishes a schedule: event channels, channels that loop the same content and some smaller channels have no guide data at all, so their row stays empty in every player.

When the missing channel is one that clearly runs scheduled programs, the problem is usually in the matching step: the identifier on the channel does not match any entry in the guide. There is nothing to change on your side in that case. Let support know which channel is affected, so it can be looked at.

The times are wrong

When the guide shows programs an hour or more out of step with what is actually on, the cause is almost always a clock or a time zone.

  • Check the date and time of the device. Set them to update automatically from the network. A device with the wrong date may also refuse to show the guide at all.
  • Check the time zone of the device. Canada has six time zones between British Columbia and Newfoundland, and the Newfoundland one sits half an hour apart from its neighbours. A device left on the wrong zone shifts every program in the guide by the difference.
  • Look for a time shift setting in the player. Many players have an option called EPG time shift or time offset. It should normally stay at zero; if someone changed it, every entry will be out by that amount.
  • Watch the change of clocks. Most of Canada moves its clocks in spring and autumn, but most of Saskatchewan does not. A device set to the wrong zone can look correct for half the year and be an hour out for the other half.

The guide has stopped updating

A guide that shows old programs, or that runs out after a day or two, has stopped refreshing.

  1. Run a manual update of the guide in the player.
  2. Check the automatic update setting and shorten the interval if there is one.
  3. Clear the player's cache from the device settings, then open the player again and let it reload.
  4. If none of that works, remove the playlist or login from the player and add it again. Have your access details at hand before you do.

Fixes that depend on how you sign in

If you use an Xtream Codes login

Make sure the guide option is enabled for that account in the player, if it has one, and that the server address matches the one in your message character for character. Updating the player to its latest version also helps, since guide handling is a frequent subject of fixes.

If you use an M3U playlist

If the guide never appears, your player may be waiting for a guide address. Look in its settings for a field called EPG URL, XMLTV or TV guide source. Do not fill it with a guide found elsewhere on the internet: its identifiers will not match your channels, and the schedules will be wrong or missing. Contact support and ask what to enter for your playlist. If your player accepts an Xtream Codes login, switching to it is often the simplest solution, because the guide then comes in by itself.

Getting more out of the guide

Once the guide works, a few habits make it much more useful with a large lineup.

  • Build a favourites list. Most players let you mark channels, and many can show the guide for favourites only.
  • Hide the groups you never watch. Fewer categories make the guide faster to scroll and quicker to load on modest devices.
  • Try the different views. Players often offer a classic grid, a list per channel and a now-and-next view. The grid is best on a television, the list on a phone.

When to contact support

If the guide is still empty an hour after you signed in and refreshed it, if the times are wrong on every device even with the correct time zone, or if a main channel has no schedule, contact support. Say which device and player you use, which channels are affected and whether you signed in with a login or a playlist.
